Elderly Man Dies From Crash Injuries

There was further tragedy on the roads of NI this week with news that an 88-year-old man had died in hospital yesterday after his car was involved in a three vehicle collision in Co Londonderry.

The crash happened a week ago on the Glenshane Road and involved a police car as well as the two other vehicles. The police driver was also taken to hospital with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.

Also yesterday, the road toll took graphic form as the funeral took place in the same area of the man killed in a hit-and-run accident on Sunday.

Martin Gallagher, 24, from Sandale Park in Derry City, died after he was hit by a car on the Racecourse Road in Pennyburn at about 2.20am on Sunday.

It has already emerged that a 22-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the incident has been released on bail, just days before Mr Gallagher was buried following Requiem Mass at St Brigid's Church in Carnhill.

Mr Gallagher was a well known marathon runner and a member of Foyle Valley Athletic Club and is survived by his parents Martin and Elizabeth and siblings Michelle, 36, Richard, 30, Anne, 28, and Ryan, 23.

Commenting, SDLP MLA Mary Bradley said Mr Gallagher’s death was "an awful tragedy”.

"My heart goes out to the young man's family. They are a very good, honest and hard-working family and this is a terrible tragedy for them,” she said.

"I know that the community will gather around the family at this most unbearable time and hope that they can take that as a positive for how well liked he was.

"Words cannot describe the pain and suffering that results from a road traffic death because it is so immediate and final. My thoughts and prayers are with the family that, in time, they can learn to cope, the best they can," she said.

Meanwhile, last night, motorists across Co Londonderry were being warned to be on their guard as there were reports of severe flooding in several parts of the county due to heavy rainfall.

Specifically, drivers were told to be on the look-out for floods on the treacherous Glenshane Road, as well as the Balllyquinn Road, Berryhill Road and Victoria Road which were also badly affected.

Things were so bad that the Met Office issued a severe weather warning and police advised people not to travel unless it was absolutely necessary.

Severe flooding shut a main road in Derry City, with residents' homes in grave danger of being inundated with water.
