Dodds meets with police chief to assess north Belfast situation

The MP for North Belfast, Nigel Dodds, has met with the Assistant Chief Constable in order to discuss the security situation in his constituency.

The meeting, which took place on Monday January 21, follows a night of violence in which homes were petrol bombed and cars set alight as gangs of youths took to the streets in the Whitewell and Shore Road areas. Rioters also hurled petrol bombs, stones and blast bombs at police and fire officers.

Three firefighters were injured during the attacks which have been condemned by the Fire Brigades Union. Spokesman Jim Barbour said he was utterly disgusted at the attacks which he called “absolutely outrageous.”

Earlier, the home of a Protestant pensioner in the Whitewell area was extensively damaged when youths threw a petrol bomb through his front window.

The 76-year-old man had a lucky escape as he had left his pensioner’s bungalow to watch football at his son’s home nearby.

Two buses carrying disabled young people to church were also stoned during Sunday’s rioting in north Belfast. Although none of the young people were injured, they were said to be very shocked. (AMcE)
