SF Welcomes All-Ireland Energy Bid
Sinn Féin Economy Spokesperson, Mitchel McLaughlin has welcomed proposals by Energy Regulators North and South to harmonise energy prices through the introduction of an all-Ireland retail energy market.
The South Antrim MLA said: "This is a welcome and progressive move that I believe will help deliver more affordable energy prices to consumers across the island. The introduction of the all-Ireland Single Electricity Market (SEM) in 2007 enabled all energy generators on the island to contribute to a single pool, which provided opportunities for more efficient business planning and corporate savings. The benefits delivered to the consumer by SEM resulted in energy price increases being curtailed.
"The benefits to both the Energy Sector and consumers are obvious. All-Ireland harmonisation should deliver efficiencies through elimination of duplication of resources and lower energy prices to consumers."
Mr McLaughlin continued: "I believe that the Energy sector through its collaborative approach is demonstrating that if this same attention was applied to other sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, health and education the tangible benefits to the people would be apparent in a relatively short time."

A new association is being formed today aimed at expanding the use of renewable energy sources, such as wind power. The Northern Ireland Renewable Industry Group (NIRIG), which represents the collective voices of Irish Wind Energy Association (IWEA) and RenewableUK in Northern Ireland, was officially launched on Thursday.

Established for over 30 years in Ann Street Belfast, the Bogart chain also comprises a store in Newry and a recently opened flagship store in Belfast City Centre.

Wind energy could form the bedrock for achieving Northern Ireland's renewable energy targets, the Environment Minister has said. Speaker at the Irish Wind Energy Association Workshop in Belfast, Edwin Poots reaffirmed his support for the wind industry and all other renewable energy technologies.

The green economy should be at the heart of government programmes, according to Sinn Féin's Bairbre de Brún, who said energy efficiency schemes could create much-needed jobs for the ailing construction sector. The newly re-elected MEP (pictured) appeared before the Climate Change Inquiry held by the Assembly Environment Committee last week.
