Education Minister approves funding for Sperrin Integrated College
The Education Minister has announced that he has approved funding for a new Post-Primary Integrated School - Sperrin Integrated College at Magherafelt.
Education Minister Martin McGuinness said: “I am delighted to announce that I have approved funding for Sperrin Integrated College. The establishment of this school is further evidence of the growing support for the development of the integrated sector and I pay tribute to the group of very committed parents behind the initiative.”
Mr McGuinness said he was satisfied that with 78 pre-enrolment applications for next September the College had clearly demonstrated its potential to meet the reduced viability criteria of an initial intake of 50 for post-primary schools. He added: “It is now up to the College to enrol the required number of pupils within the necessary religious balance in time for the school opening in September 2002.”
Mr McGuinness concluded: “Decisions to award grant-aid to new schools are not taken lightly as they involve a substantial investment of scarce capital resources. Viability criteria are therefore necessary to ensure that schools such as Sperrin Integrated College are robust before my Department commits capital funding. I will, therefore, want to be sure of the school's long-term viability over a period of time before committing capital grants. In the meantime recurrent funding will be available from September 2002 subject to the College meeting the necessary intake and religious balance conditions.” (AMcE)
