Elderly Farmer Shot Dead In Wicklow
An elderly farmer was shot dead in Co Wicklow yesterday evening.
Gardai in Baltinglass are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident in which the man, named locally as Walter Tomkins, aged 66, sustained gunshot wounds at a house at Cronelea, Shillelagh, at approximately 6.30pm.
He was pronounced dead at the scene where the body remains, pending a post mortem examination.
His death is believed to have followed a dispute over where his 90-year-old mother, Isabella, was buried.
The shooting is understood to have happened in the hallway of their house and it is believed Mr Tomkins knew his killer.
A firearm was recovered at the scene and a man in his early 60s was arrested and is being detained at Baltinglass Garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939.
The scene has been sealed off and the Office of the State Pathologist has been notified.

Police Appeal After Man Shot Dead In Bangor
Police are appealing for information following the murder of Colin Horner, who was shot in front of his three-year-old son at Sainbury's car park in Bangor on Sunday, 28 May. The boy was in the car at the time of the attack. It is understood Mr Horner, originally from Co Antrim, has loyalist links.
