Creative Industries Get Fillip

The development of arts and crafts are among the priorities for the Stormont Executive.

That's according to NI Culture Minister Nelson McCausland who said that the development of the creative industries in Northern Ireland is one of the main priorities.

The DUP Minister (pictured) was speaking as he attended the launch of Creative Peninsula event, as part of August Craft month which is Northern Ireland's annual celebration of craft.

"In these tough economic times, the Creative Industries have the potential to generate very significant and long lasting economic benefits for Northern Ireland.

"With the sector focused on achieving an annual turnover of £23m, the Northern Ireland Executive recognises the growing significance of the Creative Industries, which inspires people from all walks of life," he said, noting that, in the last two years the Creative Industries Innovation Fund has awarded approximately £3.6m to over 170 innovative projects.

On the visit, he heard that Creative Peninsula is designed to promote artists and craftspeople living and working in the Ards Peninsula.

The forthcoming event - which is now in its ninth year - runs from today until 15th August and offers a series of exhibitions, open studios and taster workshops.

In addition, there will be a 'Craft in the Square' day featuring demonstrations, music and an opportunity for children to explore a variety of creative techniques.

"It is encouraging to note that the work of local schoolchildren will also be on display and that young people will be invited to get involved in creative workshops which could inspire some of them to follow this path in the future," Minister McCausland concluded.
