Farm Management In Focus
Farmer's wife Lizzie Rodgers is looking forward to an important series of rural events - the National Beef Association 'Weaning Management and Cattle Handling' farm walks and talks.
These are to be on two very different, but equally impressive suckler units, one with 30 cows and the other with 105.
"These are practical events run by farmers for farmers serious about the business of making money from the beef business," said Lizzie, (pictured with one of the 'subjects').
"Miriam Parker, the Co Down cattle handling consultant seen in the Jimmy Docherty BBC2 TV 'Private Lives of Cows' programme will demonstrate stress free livestock handled using safe, simple systems in an era when help is in short supply on most farms.
"Farmers will also be able to seek Miriam's advice on improving their existing handling facilities and take home tips on designing new pens and crushes," she continued, noting that other demonstrations will include a 'Weaning without Woe' debate led by vet Mairead O'Grady from Intervet Schering Plough Animal Health.
These free farm walks and talks are on Tues, Aug 24 from 2-6pm at the farm of James Nelson, 21 Carnduff Rd, Larne and the following day from 5-8pm hosted by John McSorley & Sons, 123 Redergen Road, Beragh.
