'Powerful' Boost For Wexford Builders
Up to 400 construction workers will be employed during the redevelopment of the Great Island power station at Campile in Wexford.
In addition, around 40 people will be employed on the site when the new development is finished.
It will be located within the existing operational power plant facility.
Planning permission was granted by An Bord Pleanála earlier this month for the €250 million redevelopment of the station by Spanish energy company Endesa.
The new plant will be a replacement for the existing heavy fuel oil power station currently in operation.
The plant will be operated as a natural gas turbine plant, with its electricity generating capacity to be increased and CO2 emissions to be cut by 50%.
Endesa had previously announced it would spend €450 million upgrading the power stations which it took over from the ESB two years ago - Wexford's Great Island, Tarbert in Co Kerry, Rhode in Co Offaly and Tawnaghmore in Co Mayo.
The €250 million upgrading of Great Island, due to be completed in 2012, represents the greatest portion of that investment so far.
Endesa is now the second biggest utility in Ireland, after the ESB.

North West to benefit from natural gas power plant
The creation of a new natural gas fired power station in County Londonderry is set to create almost 400 jobs during the construction phase of the development. Work on the state-of-the-art Coolkeeragh power plant is to commence in early 2002, following the granting of planning permission on Tuesday 31 July.

Energy Minister Charles Hendry will today give the go-ahead for InterGen's proposals to construct a new 900MW gas power plant at the London Gateway Logistics Park, Coryton, Essex. The plans are for a new £600 million power station comprising of up to two CCGT generating units, each around 450MW in capacity.

Committee to visit Coolkeeragh Power Station
A delegation from the Northern Ireland Assembly’s Committee for Enterprise, Trade and Investment is to visit Coolkeeragh Power Station on Friday 5 July 2002. Committee Chairperson Pat Doherty will lead the delegation of assembly members to visit the new station in order to learn more about the project.

Power plant gets the go ahead
The Government has given the go ahead to plans by Coolkeeragh ESB in the development of a new natural gas CCGT power plant on the outskirts of Londonderry. The £150 million project is expected to provide the cheapest electricity in Northern Ireland and is likely to be up and running by 2004.
