Unemployment in southern Ireland is on the rise

Figures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) in the Republic of Ireland has muted Wednesday’s announcement that DeCare International of the US, a leader in the US dental benefits industry, is to significantly expand its existing Irish operation in County Mayo and create over 200 jobs.

Figures released by the CSO reveal that the gross national product (GNP) during the second quarter fell to 1.6 per cent and that unemployment was rising for the first time in five years.

The total out of work is now 79,000, an increase of 1,800 on the same time last year. The GNP, meanwhile, currently stands at IR£14.7 billion with a reported slowing in the rate of both imports and exports. There was also a 5.5 per cent year-on-year rise in consumer spending.

The figures followed the DeCare announcement in which the US company revealed it is to establish a new facility at Crossmolina, County Mayo.

The company also plans to expand its existing operation at Claremorris in a IR£2 million investment which is expected to create up to 210 new jobs in the region. (MB)
