Housing Proposed For Border Barracks
A major regeneration project for the former military barracks at Forkhill in South Armagh has been mooted.
The eight-acre hilltop site overlooking Forkhill was vacated several years ago by the Army, but until now little progress had been made in deciding its future.
However, with the completion of an economic appraisal and intensive dialogue with a range of local stakeholders, the NI Social Development Minister Alex Attwood (pictured) has announced his Department is acquiring the site so that the regeneration can now get underway.
Minister Attwood said: "In anticipation of acquiring the Forkhill ex-military site, my Department had already carried out some initial masterplanning work. This means we are now in a position to move forward quickly with the regeneration.
"The main elements of the regeneration could include up to 20 houses, community leisure and recreational facilities, a crèche and a play park and customised economic infrastructure including enterprise units.
"There is also scope for a health and welfare facility. It will be all about jobs, homes and wellbeing - although we will consult closely with the local community before these elements are finalised," he explained.

Redeveloper appointed for £5m Shankill Mill site
The Department for Social Development has announced the preferred developer to transform the former Lawnbrook Mill site off Belfast's Shankill Road. The Brownfield site will be redeveloped by ADH (NI) to provide much needed private homes, which is a welcome development for the local community.

Community business project opens in Forkhill
A £555,000 community project comprising retail/office units and a light industrial unit has been officially opened in Co Armagh. The Forkhill scheme, funded by the Community Regeneration and Improvement Special Programme (CRISP), will assist economic and physical regeneration in the Co Armagh village.

Carrickfergus £2m Regeneration Project Complete
A £2m regeneration project for Carrickfergus has been completed today. The public realms scheme works commenced just over a year ago in February 2012 and involved overall improvements to the appearance of the town centre.

Barracks sale to aid Crumlin Road jail site
NIO Minister, Ian Pearson today announced that proceeds from the sale of the former army barracks at Malone Road would be used for the economic and social regeneration of the Crumlin Road jail. The Malone Road site was recently sold for around £3.8 million on the open market, with the proceeds being identified for the jail's regeneration.
