Robinson Seeks MLA Pay Cuts
Ministers at Stormont may be on course for a voluntary pay-cut as part of a deal to finalise a cost-saving budget.
The move could see politicians across all parties take the personal drop in pay as well as to promise to reduce the use of consultants in order to 'sugar-the pill'.
NI First Minister Peter Robinson said the cross-party talks at Stormont must deliver a draft budget before Christmas in the wake of Westminster demands for £4bn (€4.7bn) in cuts.
"I hope that the budget will involve agreements in a whole range of areas, from the use of consultants to the future of guanos, and from the issue of public sector pay to how the Executive can raise new revenue," he said.
Speaking to a meeting of the NI Chief Executive's Forum in Templepatrick, Co Antrim, he said: "Final agreement has not yet been reached, but I hope we can make significant progress in the days ahead."
Among anticipated measures on the table along with a 5%-10% pay reduction for MLAs is a Civil Service pay freeze.
However, it is expected that frontline health services won't face any cuts while a refusal to introduce water charges or drop free prescriptions, or end free travel for the over-60s have also been floated.

Two UUP MLA's have called on the Northern Ireland Executive to implement a new pay scheme for Ulster's firefighters. North Antrim UUP MLA the Rev Robert Coulter called for the introduction of a new pay formula in a motion to the Assembly on Monday. Mr Coulter said he hoped it would help achieve a real remedy to the question of firefighter’s pay.
