Owners of CastleCourt Centre propose expansion

The CastleCourt shopping centre in Belfast is set double in size resulting in the creation of 3,500 jobs if the Centre’s joint owners have their way.

Owners, Westfield and MEPC, announced their intentions for the shopping centre when they submitted a planning application to increase the size of the city centre complex from 31,000 sq metres to more than 80,000 sq metres.

The plans will also see car parking spaces increase from 1,540 spaces to 3,125 spaces.

The new development is also likely to lead to the regeneration of North Street and its surroundings area as well as the revitalisation of Smithfield Market.

The proposals follow an announcement earlier in the week that rival developers have been given the go-ahead to begin work on a new retail and leisure park in east Belfast. The D5 development at Tillysburn was finally given the go-ahead after the House of Lords threw out an appeal by local traders to block the initiative. (MB)
