Murder inquiry launched in east Belfast

The RUC have launched a murder inquiry after a man was found stabbed to death at his home in east Belfast.

The victim identified as 46-year-old Arthur Berryman was murdered after his wife answered the door at their home in Imperial Street in the Woodstock area of Belfast. A masked man wielding a knife forced his way into the couple’s home and struck Mrs Berryman in the face and then stabbed her husband repeatedly. Mr Berryman was declared dead at the scene. Police say that the killer escaped on foot.

RUC Detective Chief Inspector Larry Cheshire said the man had died as a result of a “vicious and unprovoked attack.”

He also said no motive for the attack had been established but that he wasn’t ruling out a sectarian motive.

A post mortem examination is still to be carried out. (AMcE)
