Three held after two men shot dead in separate incidents

Three men are being questioned by police following two separate fatal shootings in Northern Ireland.

Two men were detained following a shooting in Craigavon, County Armagh and another man has been detained following a separate shooting incident which took place in a bar in Fivemiletown, County Tyrone.

It is understood that a 27-year-old Royal Irish Regiment soldier from Fivemiletown is being questioned about the shooting of an as yet unnamed 27-year-old Catholic man who died as the result of several gunshots at the Four Ways Hotel in Fivemiletown. It is understood that police have recovered a handgun. The Protestant man was detained in the neighbouring village of Clougher after he walked into a police station on Sunday night.

While police are not ruling out a sectarian motive for the killing, Sinn Féin MP for the area Michelle Gildernew described the Fivemiletown shooting as “blatantly sectarian”.

The shooting of 19-year-old Peter Joseph McNally in a house in the Westacres area of Drumgor in Craigavon at around 1.00 am on Monday, October 29, is thought to be as the result of a dispute between local criminals.

The Westacres estate remained closed off on Monday as forensic experts examined the scene. A woman was struck in the face when two men forced their way into the house. Four children in the house at the time of the incident escaped injury.

Following the shooting two men from the Craigavon area, one aged 47 and the other aged 27, were questioned by police. (SP)
