Easyjet applies to run Belfast-Heathrow service

Easyjet has stepped in with a proposal to run the Belfast to London route which is being abandoned by British Airways on October 27.

British Airways announced its intention to pull out of the six-flights-a-day service from Belfast International Airport to London Heathrow as part of a cost-cutting exercise in the wake of a worldwide cutback in carriers’ services.

Easyjet Chief Executive Ray Webster said that if BA could not make the route work then it should be prepared to hand over the operation to someone else.

However, it is understood that BA has not surrendered its flight slots into Heathrow airport and this is effectively blocking any other carrier from picking up the route.

Euro MP Jim Nicholson has warned that the ongoing problems facing the airline industry could lead to the province being “marginalized” and said he did not believe that it was sufficient to “live in hope that other companies will come in to take up the slack”.

Mr Nicholson said that he was deeply concerned by recent developments such as British Airways decision to withdraw their service from Northern Ireland. It would, he warned, lead to the province being further isolated and marginalized. (SP)
