Belfast Launches Summer Events

Belfast City Council have revealed a variety of up coming summer events as part of a new programme, and the good news is, much of it is free.

Along with a number of children focused events, including Victorian era fun and games, petting zoos and urban sports, the council has taken steps to attract tourists to Belfast, and has come up with a list of activities to keep them there.

In addition to the prestigious annual Rose Week at Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park from 13-17 July, which attracts upwards of 70,000 visitors a year, there is a full programme of events, street entertainment, environmental activities, music and dance, and a photographic workshop in the city.

Belfast Waterfront Hall is also hosting a week of classic film on a big, big screen in its auditorium from 5-14 August.

The council said the programme was part of its efforts to provide a memorable summer of fun for locals and visitors alike.

Mayor Niall Ó Donnghaile, said: "In Belfast we have one of the youngest populations so when summer arrives it is important that we have something that young people and their families can enjoy.

"Many of the events on offer are free of charge and open to all ages. At a time when many people don't have much money to spare that's an important aspect of our services to ratepayers."

Family fun days will also be run throughout July and August in various parks across the city with many organised with help from the local community.

Among the major events taking place is the Westfield Health British Transplant Games at the Mary Peter's Track and Queen’s Physical Education centre on 4-7 August.
