Recalled Assembly condemns attacks on America

The Northern Ireland Assembly was recalled from its summer recess to debate a motion condemning the terrorist attacks on the United States of America.

The request, which was agreed by Speaker Lord Alderdice, was submitted on Wednesday September 12 by acting first and deputy first ministers Sir Reg Empey and Séamus Mallon.

The motion, submitted by Sir Reg and Mr Mallon, reads: “That this Assembly condemns the shocking and inhuman acts of terrorism carried out in the United States of America on Tuesday and, on behalf of the people of Northern Ireland, extends its deepest sympathy to the Government and people of the United States of America and all who have suffered so grievously.”

On Wednesday a book of condolences was opened for people in Northern Ireland who wished to express their sympathy for those killed and hurt in the terrorist attacks in America.

Northern Ireland Secretary of State Dr John Reid was among the first to sign the book placed in the Belfast City Hall.

The book was also signed by visiting US ambassador Richard Haass, Belfast Lord Mayor Jim Rodgers and American Consul General Barbara Stephenson. (AMcE)
