Garda Found Guilty Of Assault
A Waterford-based garda has been found guilty of assaulting a man who was arrested in the city last year.
Sergeant Martha McEnery of Waterford Garda station was found not guilty of the more serious charge of assault causing harm to Anthony Holness, but was found guilty to assaulting him.
Mr Holness had accused four gardaí of assaulting him in New Street in Waterford around 3am on January 29 last year, while they were attempting to arrest him for a public order offence.
Garda Daniel Hickey was found guilty by the same jury at Waterford Circuit Court last Friday of causing harm to Mr Holness, while another officer, Sergeant Alan Kissane was found not guilty of the same charge.
Another officer, Garda John Burke, was found guilty of intending to pervert the course of justice, after the court heard that he had deliberately diverted CCTV cameras away from his colleagues while working in the control room at Waterford Garda station.
McEnery, Burke and Hickey have all been remanded on bail and are due to be sentenced on November 7.
