"It is believed he was shot three times in the leg and once in the arm.

"This man is receiving treatment in hospital, [but] his injuries are not believed to be life threatening."

The police said that a blue Mercedes car was also damaged by shots during this incident, being hit on its windows.

The statement concluded, that anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact CID in Strand Road Police Station on 0845 600 8000.

"Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111," the statement said.

The Alliance Chief Whip, MLA Stewart Dickson has condemned the shooting and said: "This is an appalling crime carried out by vicious thugs who have no place in our society.

"The people responsible for this shooting are hurting the city and putting it in the news for all the wrong reasons. These people must be apprehended by the police, but they will need help from the public, so I would urge anybody with any information to contact the police.

"I hope the victim of this barbaric shooting will be able to recover from his injuries and he is in my thoughts," he said this morning.
