Belfast Conference Tackles Ageing World
Older people are 'taking over the world' with news this week that ageing is indeed transforming the world.
Research has confirmed that more and more people are living longer and longer - but the extra years bring a range of challenges for individuals, families and public bodies.
These are just some of topics being addressed at an International Association for Official Statistics (IAOS) conference in Belfast this week.
China along with India has a good fraction of the world's elderly population, but by 2050 China is expected to have as many people aged 65 or more than the entire current population of the United States of America.
The organisation of the conference is being assisted locally by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) and is being held in Queen's University.
There will be around 100 delegates from 25 countries attending the event called 'The Ageing Population' and including a number of distinguished speakers who will cover a variety of topics including the social and economic policy impacts of population ageing and the impact of ageing in the developed and developing worlds.
The keynote speaker is Dr Richard Suzman who is Director of the Division of Behavioural and Social Research at the United States National Institute on Aging. Dr Suzman said: "I was delighted to be asked by the conference organisers to give the keynote address. The World's population is ageing at an unprecedented rate.
"Improved health and longevity should be viewed primarily as a success story, however the continued growth in the number of older people across the world brings challenges for public policy.
"This conference will provide a focus on ageing research and link those who provide the essential figures in a wide range of age-related policy areas," he said.
Welcoming the conference delegates, Dr Norman Caven, Chief Executive of NISRA said: "This conference provides a valuable opportunity for statisticians and researchers to come together and exchange findings from a range of perspectives and countries."

Positive Ageing Month Kicks Off In Belfast
Hundreds of senior citizens visited Belfast City Hall yesterday to kick off Positive Ageing Month at the 2019 Age-friendly Convention. The contribution made by the city's older citizens will be celebrated throughout the month with over 200 events, classes, workshops and activities to take place in various venues.

Active Ageing Strategy Extended Until 2022
The Executive's Active Ageing Strategy has been extended to May 2022, Communities Minister Carál Ní Chuilín has announced. The Strategy has a vision 'of being an age friendly region in which people as they get older, are valued and supported to live actively to their fullest potential; with their rights respected and their dignity protected'.
