Walker Cup triumph for amateur golfers
Great Britain and Ireland's amateur golfers have retained the Walker Cup for the first time in nearly 80 years.
The cup was clinched when Scotland’s Marc Warren defeated James Driscoll on the par-three 17th, however it was Luke Donald and Nick Dougherty who led the charge on the final day by winning twice.
Trailing by one point going into the last day, Great Britain and Ireland won three of the four alternate shot matches in the morning to regain the lead. They eventually won 15-9, equalling their record points total in the competition.
While the Americans have won the competition the most down the years, US dominance has begun to slowly shift across the Atlantic in recent years.
Only two years ago Great Britain and Ireland erased a two-point deficit on the Sunday by winning 10 of their 12 matches at Nairn Golf Club in Scotland to clinch the trophy.
Sunday wasn’t much different, as the home side trailed by one point going into the last day but eventually won three of their four alternate shot matches in the morning to regain the lead.
The only American highlight was Bryce Molder, who saved par from the bunker on the 18th for a one up victory over Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell. (MB)
