Crack Down On 'Litter Louts' And Boozers

Officials in Belfast have been cracking down on many offenders across the city including those responsible for littering the streets.

A pub landlord has been fined £250 for failing to properly dispose of waste at his city centre pub.

Jim McMahon, owner of Buffer McMahon's bar on Garmoyle Street, was also ordered to pay costs of £66 after he breached a notice that had been served by Belfast City Council in relation to ongoing problems with waste disposal at his premises.

Meanwhile a woman was fined £50 for failing to provide information into an alleged littering offence on New Lodge Road, when a cigarette butt was dropped from a car.

Julie-Ann Kingham, from Oldpark Road in north Belfast, was also ordered to pay costs of £66 in relation to the offence which happened on May 11th.

Elsewhere, four people have been fined for on-street drinking in Belfast.

Jonathan Beattie, from Oswald Park in the west of the city, was fined £50 and ordered to pay costs of £66 after he was detected drinking alcohol at Berry Street on July 22nd.

Christopher Leitch, from Oranmore Drive, also in west Belfast, was fined £50 and ordered to pay costs of £66 after he was detected drinking alcohol at Black’s Road on July 30th.

Emmet Knocker, from Hopefield Avenue in north Belfast, was fined £50 and ordered to pay costs of £66 after he was detected drinking alcohol at Victoria Gardens on August 13th.

Mark Scott, from Crossland Court in west Belfast, was fined £75 and ordered to pay costs of £66 after he was detected drinking alcohol at Bradbury Place on August 24th.

In other associated enforcement news, three shopkeepers have been fined for selling cigarettes to persons under the legal age.

Stephen Shiels, T/A Topup on the Cliftonville Road in north Belfast, was fined £500 and ordered to pay costs of £69 following a test purchasing exercise at the shop on August 25th.

Sinead Hickey, T/A Sinead's on Antrim Road, was fined £300 and ordered to pay costs of £69 following a test purchasing exercise at the shop on August 28th.

Charles Hamiton, T/A Poilins on Iveagh Street in west Belfast, was fined £500 and ordered to pay costs of £69 following a test purchasing exercise at the shop on August 9th.

All the prosecutions were brought by Belfast City Council.

Street Drinkers Pay The Cost
Five people have been fined at Belfast Magistrates Court for drinking alcohol in public. Tyrone McCann, from Richmond Avenue in Newtownabbey, was fined £50 and ordered to pay costs of £66 after he was detected drinking alcohol at Suffolk Road in west Belfast on January 16.

Benefit Frauds Face Court Sanctions
Fraudsters are being made to pay the price for claiming a variety of benefits they were not entitled to. A total of 14 people were convicted at Belfast Magistrates' court yesterday with Joanne McBride (35) of Portallo Street, Belfast claiming Income Support totalling £4,451 while failing to declare she was working.

Belfast City Council has been busy enforcing legislation on a variety of matters, ranging from shopkeepers selling tobacco to underage customers to dog owners running foul of the law.

Dog Attack Man Faces Court Fine
A 'Staffie' dog attack has landed a Belfast man in court. He was fined £200 and ordered to pay £300 compensation after his dog attacked and injured a man last December. Robert Gary Bradshaw, from Orkney Street in west Belfast, was convicted of the offence at Belfast Magistrates Court today and was also ordered to pay costs of £69.

Suspended Prison Term For Fraudster
Nine people were convicted of benefit fraud at Belfast Magistrates' court this week for claiming benefits they were not entitled to - with one handed a jail term. Colin McGookin (52) of Sheringhurst Park, Belfast claimed Income Support, Incapacity Benefit and Disability Living Allowance totalling £25,168 while failing to declare employment.
