Action Cancer Centre comes under attack from vandals
Vandals have attacked the headquarters of a Belfast cancer charity, causing widespread damage to the building and disrupting vital treatment sessions for cancer patients due to attend clinics the next day.
The attack took place on Tuesday 31 July, when Action Cancer House on Marlborough Park Road came under attack from vandals throwing bricks. The attack destroyed several windows including seven stained glass decorative panels, which are said to be over a hundred years old.
Clinics at the Centre were subsequently delayed the next day while staff worked to clear the treatment areas of broken glass.
The building, which is about to see the finalisation of a £650,000 extension, will now need to step up fundraising efforts to find the money to pay for the repair of the unique windows.
Action Cancer’s Chief Executive Peter Quigley condemned the attack as “absolutely sickening”, and added that staff would rather devote their time to providing care for those in need rather than “wasting time clearing up after vandals who contribute nothing but destruction.”
The RUC have appealed for anyone with further information regarding the attack to come forward. (CL)

A Northern Ireland man has died of a suspected heart attack while taking part in a charity walk on Ben Nevis in the Scottish Highlands. Brendan Patrick O'Hare, 42, from the Four Winds area of Belfast, was walking on the mountain track when he collapsed at approximately 11.30am on Saturday, September 7.
