Child's Road Death Pre-Christmas 'Tragedy'

There are as yet few details of a shocking tragedy that left a child dead yesterday in south Belfast.

The Alliance South Belfast MLA Anna Lo has already described the death of the five-year-old child in a car accident on Monday as a tragedy.

Anna Lo MLA said: "This is a sad, sad tragedy. It is made even worse as it happened just before Christmas.

"My thoughts and sympathies are with the family.

"I can not even begin to think what they are going through at this difficult time."

It happened on the Upper Lisburn Road at about 3.30pm on Monday.

Police will only say that the victim died "following a collision with a car on private property". The child's name has not been released and there are no further details at present.

Last night, the SDLP South Belfast MLA Conal McDevitt described the accident as "devastating".

"On behalf of the SDLP, I would like to express our sincere sympathy to the family of the little boy who must be going through hell right now," he said.

"There is a great deal of sadness among the community in south Belfast following, what appears to be, a tragic accident."
