Securicor staff threaten protest action

Securicor management have held emergency meetings with trade union representatives amid reports that employees fear for their lives following a recent spate of robberies throughout the province.

Following the talks, held on Tuesday 24 July, a spokesperson from the GMB Union revealed that Securicor staff have been considering protest action following an escalating number of attacks that have involved employees being held at gunpoint.

It is thought that there are at least two gangs behind the attacks, although it is as yet unclear whether paramilitary organisations are involved. There have been at least 25 separate robberies this year, with the latest taking place in Newcastle on Tuesday 24 July when a guard was forced to hand over a cash box to a gunman in Main Street.

Other times, the robbers target staff when loading cash into cash dispenser machines.

A Securicor spokesperson added: “We have been working very hard with the GMB union, the police and the government in an attempt to find a solution to the issues that we face.”
