New Homes For Bangor

Social Development Minister, Nelson McCausland, today announced plans to invest over £1.1 million for the redevelopment of housing in the Kilcooley Estate in Bangor. The redevelopment will see 24 flats at Kilclief Gardens demolished and replaced by a more sustainable mix of new accommodation. The flats are bleak and unpopular attracting an element that used them as cover for anti-social behaviour. Minister McCausland said: "This is an important day for the people of Kilcooley Estate. The building of these new townhouses will remove the stigma associated with the current flats and provide a much better housing mix in the area.”The announcement was made after Minister McCausland gave full approval to the Housing Executive's proposals to redevelop this part of Kilcooley Estate.

Irish Tourist Drowns In Melbourne River

A body has been recovered from a river in Melbourne following the search for a missing Irish tourist.Victoria police divers recovered the body of the man in the Yarra River yesterday at about 12.30am. The 27-year-old, believed to be from Clondalkin, has yet to be identified. The two men entered the river from the bank near Federation Square shortly after 9pm.The man was attempting to swim across the river with another man who was later rescued.A British bar worker in Australia, who saved one of the tourists, had heard them at the bar discussing swimming across the river and warned against it. Dave Brearley, 22, from Manchester, told 3AW radio: "When I thought about jumping in I was scared. I thought, I could be in the same position as them in five minutes. I could be drawn in myself. But I couldn't stand there and watch someone drown. So it was either I stand there and watch someone drown or risk my life. So I just had to do it. "I've heard the best thing to do is drag them out backwards," he continued. "So I put my arm over his shoulder as if I was grabbing him from behind and dragged him out backwards. He was panicking and in shock, and he swallowed a lot of water so I was trying to keep him calm and get him to the edge as fast as possible. "By the time I got to the edge, someone asked me if there was anyone else in the water. I said 'yeah – his friend is still in there'. And a few other guys jumped in and tried to help him, but obviously weren't successful."
