NEW PERMANENT SECRETARY FOR DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

THE Head of the Northern Ireland Civil Service, Mr Gerry Loughran, announced on Thursday June 21 that Gerry McGinn, currently Chief Executive Banking UK, Bank of Ireland, is to succeed Nigel Hamilton as Permanent Secretary of the Department of Education.

The announcement comes after a public competition to fill the post, which will become vacant when Mr Hamilton moves to the Department of Regional Development.

He succeeds Mr Ronnie Spence who will retire in July.

Education Minister Martin McGuinness welcomed the appointment: “Mr McGinn’s appointment comes at a time of exciting political change, not only in education but in the politics of the north and beyond. It is particularly significant that Mr McGinn joins us from the business sector, as a result of open recruitment.

“This itself is an indication of new approaches that are designed to make the institutions of government more open, transparent and accessible and to draw new talent and expertise into the public service. Mr McGinn will be a valuable addition to my department and I look forward to working with him.”

A graduate of Queen’s University Belfast and of the Columbia Graduate Business School in New York, Mr McGinn started his banking career with the National Westminster Bank and in November 1999 assumed his present role as Chief Executive, Banking UK, in the Bank of Ireland.

He was responsible for merging the Bank of Ireland’s operations in Great Britain and Northern Ireland and is a former chair of the Northern Ireland Bankers Association.

Mr McGinn is currently a member of the Senate at QUB and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Faculty of Business and Management at the University of Ulster.

Mr McGinn will take up his new post on 1 September 2001. (AMcE)
