Bomb Attack On Police Car

A bomb attack in Londonderry left the front of a police jeep badly damaged and could have killed somebody, a senior officer has said.

Police have released an image of the vehicle and described the attack as attempted murder.

Inspector Jon Burrows said: "It is only by sheer good fortune that we do not have a fatality on our hands as this attack occurred in a built-up residential area."

Vigilante group Republican Action Against Drugs has claimed responsibility for the bomb, which was thrown as officers were searching the Creggan area in relation to dissident republican activity at about 5pm on Saturday.

Youths in the area also threw stones at police.

In a statement, the PSNI said officers had searched in a professional and respectful way and made "no apology" for "tackling criminality in any form".

A 50-year-old man was arrested in the area over the weekend and taken to the Serious Crimes Unit in Antrim for questioning.

Firearms were also seized for specialist examination.

Community worker Seamus Heaney claimed police were "heavy-handed" during searches.

He said early-morning raids could be frightening or seen as harassment.

He said: "I think there has to be greater sensitivity and the highest professional standards need to be adhered to in how searches are conducted."

Two hundred residents gathered in Creggan on Sunday to protest against police searching, and the same issue drew about 100 people to a demonstration on Monday, which ended up disrupting the route of the Olympic torch.
