Car Hijacked In West Belfast

A man was threatened by two men with a knife on the Whiterock Road last night at 10.30pm.

He was not injured but was said to have been left very frightened.

The pair made off in the man's red Peugeot, which was found burnt out near St Galls GAA Club later.

Police have asked anyone with information or who saw the car making off in the direction of the Falls Road to contact them.

Romanian Women In Court On Prostitution Charges

Five Romanian nationals appeared in court today charged with controlling prostitution and running a brothel.

Belfast Magistrates Court heard that the five women operated out of a city centre apartment.

The case was adjourned for police to continue their inquiries and the women were released on bail.

It followed the unrelated guilty plea this week of a couple who ran five brothels in three Northern Ireland cities, having lured women from London under false pretences.

Lottery Money For Belfast Women's Group

A women's group has been boosted by a £48,132 grant to make improvements to the lighting, heating and insulation in its venue.

The money from the Big Lottery Fund will help Newtownards Women's Group cut down on bills.

The group was one of 16 across Northern Ireland to benefit from the BIG Energy Efficient Venues programme, which gave out more than £299,500.

Man charged with extortion
A man has appeared before Belfast Magistrates Court today charged with extorting money on behalf of loyalist paramilitaries. Brian Gould, 35, from Pine Way, denied the charges read out to him after he was accused of receiving protection money from a Chinese restaurant owner on behalf of a paramilitary group, believed to be the UVF.

Police Launch Investigation Following Arson Attack
Police have launched an investigation following an arson attack on a house in west Belfast on Wednesday. Two women, aged 61 and 23, and three children were in the property at the time, however they were not injured. Accelerant was poured through the letterbox and set on fire at around 10.30pm.

Man Bailed Over Sex Offences
A 40-year-old man has appeared before Belfast Magistrates Court today, charged in connection with a number of sexual offences. The man faces on charge of rape, two charges of sexual assault and one charge of sexual activity with a child.

'A' Level School Leavers Increase 5%
The number of pupils in Northern Ireland achieving two or more 'A' levels or equivalent increased by 4.9% during the five years to 2012/13, according to the Department of Education. The proportion of school leavers achieving two or more 'A' levels or equivalent was 55.1%, up from from 50.2% in 2008/09.
