Post-Mortem Evidence Given To Mauritius Court

The Tyrone newlywed killed in Mauritius last year was involved in a violent struggle before her death, a court has heard.

The doctor who carried out Michaela McAreavey's post-mortem examination gave evidence to court in Port Louis today, at the trial of two former hotel workers accused of the murder.

He said her bruises and tissue damage showed her death was caused by asphyxiation by the grip of a hand to her throat and a forearm around her collarbone.

She scratched her own neck in an attempt to free herself, the court heard.

The chief medical officer confirmed in his evidence that there was nothing to suggest Mrs McAreavey died from strangulation with a rope or belt.

The 27-year-old teacher was found dead in the bath of her honeymoon suite in January last year.

Prosecution lawyers claim she was killed after interrupting a burglary.

Mr McAreavey, who was first to find his wife's body, left the court before her injuries were described.

The doctor confirmed that there was no possibility she had collapsed and drowned.

Avinash Treebhoowoon, 31, and Sandip Moneea, 42, deny the murder.

The trial will continue tomorrow, when projectors and screens will be brought into the courtroom to show CCTV footage from the Legends Hotel where the McAreaveys were spending their honeymoon.
