PSNI Officers To Help At Olympics
Fifty-three officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland are to travel to London to help with the Olympics security operation.
They will be used in marine policing and close protection as well as other specialist roles.
They will join officers from other forces across the UK but only some officers are going compared to other forces' commitments, because the PSNI traditionally anticipates being busy over the summer period.
This is a long-standing arrangement and is not connected to the failure by private security firm G4S to recruit enough staff for the London 2012 Games.
A PSNI statement said: "The PSNI commitment is relatively limited given the annual demands on policing in Northern Ireland during the summer. A small number of officers with specialist skills have, for some considerable time, been planned to support the Olympics and there has been no change to that and we have not supplied any additional officers in light of the recent events surrounding venue security at the Olympics."
Army troops have been deployed to Olympic venues to help with security monitoring after G4S admitted it could not provide enough staff for the Games.
