Carr Hits Out At Moss Park Riots

SDLP Shantallow Councillor Jimmy Carr has condemned last night's riots in Moss Park.

Cllr Carr was speaking after a group youths built and set alight a barricade before pelting police with missiles.

He said: "Last night's activity appears to have arisen out of the clearance of material for a bonfire in Moss Park, but whatever tensions and sensitivities that might raise, there is no excuse for the kind of vicious and disruptive behaviour seen last night.

"I cannot condemn enough those who think that burning material in the road, terrifying local residents – some of them elderly and vulnerable – and assaulting police officers is justified by having a social grievance.

"Elements like that do not serve a community and they are not wanted by the community.

"I welcome the two arrests that have been made already, and I hope that anyone with any further information passes it on to the police as soon as possible."
