Judge Rejects Mercy Plea From Woman Whose Ear Was Bitten Off

A man who bit off part of his ex-partner's ear in a "moment of madness" has been jailed for 18 months, despite a letter from his victim asking the court to show mercy.

Belfast Crown Court heard that Jalal Uddin, of Darlett Street in the city, attacked his ex in front of their son.

He bit off part of her ear and then spat it out.

The judge rejected a letter from the victim asking the court to show Uddin mercy.

Stephen Fowler QC said the crime was so serious he must be sent to prison, and it should deter others from similar violence.

He said while he accepted that Uddin's former partner had written to ask that he be spared from jail, unfortunately in such cases her opinion was "of limited assistance to the court".

But Judge Fowler said that because of the letter, he would reduce the four-year sentence he had been planning to give out by six months.

He said: "I want to make it clear that the courts consider all offences of domestic violence as serious."

Defence lawyer Martin Morgan said that while what happened was a "vicious attack", it had "happened in the heat of the moment" in what was "a moment of madness".

He said Uddin's probation report was "saturated with remorse", but the defendant accepted he would have to go to prison.
