Stormont Abuse Enquiry Begins In October
An enquiry into institutionalised abuse in Northern Ireland will begin on October 1, it has been revealed.
The Acknowledgement Forum of the Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry will investigate long-running abuse in the Catholic Church and state-run institutions throughout Northern Ireland.
The announcement was made today by Junior Ministers Jennifer McCann and Jonathan Bell.
The enquiry will be open to victims and survivors and will begin with a registration scheme for those who wish to participate.
Junior Minister Bell said: "The Acknowledgment Forum will provide an opportunity for victims and survivors to receive acknowledgement of their experience, and I hope will bring some comfort to them. I would encourage all those who were cared for in our institutions and feel they have a story to tell, to come forward to the Acknowledgement Forum."
It was also announced that Geraldine Doherty and David Lane will join the inquiry as panel members.
Commenting on their appointment, Junior Minister McCann said: "Both have extensive experience of social and child care in England and Scotland and are experts in their field. Their participation on the judicial inquiry panel will be invaluable to the Chair.
"Victims and survivors asked us to set up an inquiry that is independent, public, judge-led and supported by an independent panel of people with acknowledged expertise. This is what we are doing."
The Junior Ministers are also announcing the creation of a temporary meeting facility for those affected by institutional abuse, prior to the upcoming inquiry.
WAVE Trauma Centres in Belfast and Derry/Londonderry from 5 October 2012 will be open every Friday morning, where a trained counsellor will be on site to support victims as required.

OFMDFM Announces Widening Of Abuse Inquiry
The enquiry into institutional abuse in Northern Ireland is to be widened in order to include cases reported between 1922 1995. The Historical Institutional Abuse enquiry was established to investigate allegations and cases of the abuse of children and young people in state-run institutions in Northern Ireland.

A new law has been passed which gives statutory powers to the Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry. The 'Inquiry into Historical Institutional Abuse Bill' gives the Inquiry Chairperson Sir Anthony Hart powers to undertake the Inquiry and to compel witnesses and evidence.
