OFMDFM Announces Widening Of Abuse Inquiry
The enquiry into institutional abuse in Northern Ireland is to be widened in order to include cases reported between 1922 1995.
The Historical Institutional Abuse enquiry was established to investigate allegations and cases of the abuse of children and young people in state-run institutions in Northern Ireland.
The news was announced by the First Minister and Deputy First Minister.
First Minister Peter Robinson said: "We have listened closely to the concerns raised by victims and are determined to ensure that this Inquiry meets the needs of victims and survivors. It is for this reason that we have decided to extend the Inquiry’s terms of reference to include those victims and survivors who suffered abuse from 1922 onwards instead of the previously announced 1945 -1995 remit."
Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness added: "The Acknowledgement Forum for Historical Institutional Abuse was announced on 1 October 2012. I want to take this opportunity to encourage every victim and survivor of institutional abuse to seize this chance to participate in the Acknowledgement Forum and the Inquiry."
The amendment means the inquiry will now assess whether there were systemic failings by the state or institutions in their duties towards children under 18 between 1922 and 1995.
The Acknowledgement Forum element of the Inquiry began on 1 October 2012 with a pre-registration process.
The enquiry formal will begin once the legislation is in place after Christmas and will report in approximately three years’ time.
Its findings and recommendations will then be considered by the Executive.
Victims and survivors can register their interest in attending the Acknowledgement Forum or the Inquiry via the Freephone: 0800 068 4935 or the website HIA Inquiry.
