NI Strikes Health Partnership With US
Northern Ireland is drawing on opportunities to partner with the US and Europe in order to improve patient care, according to Edwin Poots.
The Health Minister was speaking during his investment trip to Boston.
Minister Poots was co-hosting a lunch with the President of the Massachusetts State Senate, which saw 70 leading figures in politics, business, academia and heatlhcare come together during the EU/US eHealth Marketplace event.
The Minister was also celebrating the formal signing of a new partnership between University of Ulster and the University of Massachussetts.
Mr Poots announced that nearly £5m was available for firms to carry out research and development in Northern Ireland.
The networking conference saw over 400 leaders from 24 countries come together to promote technology in health care.
"Every organisation represented here today can identify opportunities from this event," he said.
"Health professionals have seen innovations which will reduce their workload, technology companies have sourced contacts with whom they will do business and academics have shared learning."
Senate President Theresa Murray said: "Northern Ireland and Minister Poots have served as valuable partners in our efforts to promote international collaboration and research in both Massachusetts and abroad. The EU-US eHealth Marketplace attracted international health leaders to Massachusetts and having a presence from our partners in Northern Ireland here was critical to showing the great success we have already achieved by working together."
The Health Minister and Senator Murray brought together delegations from Northern Ireland and the US to witness the signing of a new collaborative research partnership between the University of Ulster and the University of Massachusetts Lowell in the field of medical technology.
Mr Poots said: "This collaboration is a ringing endorsement of the qualities, skill and expertise available in Northern Ireland. It is a signal that we have an important role to play in both developing technology and in bringing it to market."
