L'Derry Accused Of Mixed Messages Over Drinking

Derry City Council has been accused of sending mixed messages to the public regarding drinking in public places.

Solicitor Walter Hegarty made the remarks while representing one of his clients, 52-year-old James Brolly from Foyle Road, who was fined £75 for the offence at L’Derry Magistrates Court.

His solicitor said the promotion of a Christmas continental market in the city centre where alcohol can be bought was sending mixed messages.

Postal Worker Hijacked

A postal worker has had his van hijacked in west Belfast.

The man sustained injuries to his legs when two men forced him out of his van on Springfield Avenue shortly after 11:10 on Wednesday.

Police have said the hijackers had two dogs with them.

One of the men is reported to have driven off in the van while his counterpart escaped on foot towards Springfield Road.

The victim has been treated in hospital but his condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

L'Derry Murder Trial Set For Next Month

The murder trial of a man is due to begin next month at L’Derry Crown Court.

32-year-old James Anthony Healy, from Hollymount Park in the Waterside, is charged with murdering James Christopher MacGaughey on 30 October.

He is also charged with possessing a baseball bat and herbal cannabis.

The defendant was remanded in continuing custody and will appear on 6 December.

Man Charged Over Benefit Fraud

A man has been convicted for falsely claiming benefits at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court.

Piotr Czarnoskutow, 31, of Princes Street, Lurgan claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £2,810 while failing to declare employment.

He has been given a six month prison sentence and ordered to pay court costs of £86, as well as paying any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

Woman Charged With Attempted Murder After Man Stabbed In Co Down
A 36-year-old woman has been charged with attempted murder after a man was stabbed in Co Down. The 54-year-old victim was stabbed in the Manor Court area in Moira on Monday. He is currently in a serious but stable condition in hospital. The woman is to appear at Craigavon Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Man Shot By Police Officer Arrested
A man shot in the chest by a police officer following an incident in L'Derry has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.The 42-yet-old suspect was arrested on Monday, 19 April, following the shooting in the Celandine Court area on Saturday, 17 April. He is being treated in hospital and is to be questioned by the PSNI in due course.

Man Found Dead In Banbridge Named
A man found dead in Banbridge, Co Down, has been named as Richard Gerard Scullion. A murder investigation has launched after his body was found at a house in the Millmount court area on Monday, 09 July. A 28-year-old man arrested on Monday remains in police custody after the PSNI were granted an extension.

Man Charged With Attempted Murder Over Shooting In Co Tyrone
A 32-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a shooting attack in Cookstown, Co Tyrone. A 35-year-old man was shot in the legs in the Drumcree area on Sunday, 05 June. Masked men, one armed with a handgun, attacked the victim at a house in the area.

Two Men Charged After Drugs Seized In L'Derry
Two people have been charged after drugs were found during searches in L'Derry. A quantity of suspected class B drugs, as well as cash and other items, were seized during a search in the Waterside area on Tuesday, 22 August. Suspected class A and class B drugs were also seized following a search in the Cityside area.
