Prison Officers Protest Magilligian Closure

Several dozen protesters have held a demonstration at proposals to close Magilligan Prison, Northern Ireland's second largest jail.

Campaigners, including Finlay Spratt, the chairman of the Prison Officers' Association, handed over a petition signed by thousands people to Justice Minister David Ford.

Mr Ford is consulting on the future of the prison estate.

Mr Spratt said closing Magilligan would be a "mistake".

Man Admits Facebook Threats

A 25-year-old man has admitted, in Londonderry magistrates court, that he posted a threatening message on Facebook about the brother of his former girlfriend.

Thomas Patrick Kelly, from the Corrody Road in the Waterside, admitted posting the message between January and June of this year.

The defendant also admitted a further charge of threatening to kill the same man on 6 May.

He is due to be sentenced in December.

Layer Calls For Price Prosecution To Be Stopped

A solicitor for former hunger striker Marian Price has appealed to the Director of Public Prosecutions to stop her prosecution immediately on the grounds of ill health.

Marian Price, 58, referred to in court by her married name, McGlinchey, is charged with addressing a meeting in support of a proscribed organisation in Londonderry at Easter last year.

She was arrested and returned into custody on the direction of the then Northern Ireland Secretary of State Owen Patterson.

The defendant had been on licence as part of the outworkings of the Good Friday agreement.

Mr Patterson revoked those conditions after she was photographed and filmed holding a piece of paper from which a masked man read a statement during a dissident republican Easter commemoration rally in Derry city cemetery.
