New Chief Inspector Of Criminal Justice Appointed

Northern Ireland has been appointed a new Chief Inspector of Criminal Justice.

Justice Minister David Ford has announced Brendan McGuigan will be filling the position.

Mr McGuigan was previously Deputy Chief Inspector and Chief Executive of the Criminal Justice Inspection NI.

His appointment as Chief Inspector is effective from Friday 30 November 2012.

David Ford said: "The post of Chief Inspector is one of the most challenging and crucial aspects of the Criminal Justice System.

"Brendan brings a wealth of experience to the role and I look forward to working with him as I continue my reform agenda to create an effective and fairer justice system for the whole of Northern Ireland."

Criminal Justice Inspection Northern Ireland (CJINI) is an independent public body established under the Justice (Northern Ireland) Act 2002.

The appointment last three years and carries the possibility of an extension following an assessment of satisfactory performance.

The post is full time with a salary of £102,921.

The selection is based on merit and by law political activity plays no part in the selection process.

But in appointing the position, the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland requires the political activity of appointees to be published.

Mr McGuigan has declared no political activity and holds no other public appointments.
