Eason Launches National Spelling Bee Competition
Northern Ireland newsagents Eason has declared its annual 'spelling bee' is now open for entries.
The competition is open to P7 primary school pupils across Northern Ireland and is offering a prize fund of books worth £17,000.
The competition takes the format of schools in each county competing against each other to decide the County Winner.
The winners will then take part in the Ulster provincial final, with the four provincial winners from across Ireland competing at the All-Ireland Final next June.
2012’s winner was Liam O’Lionaird, from Gaelscoil Osrai, County Kilkenny. He defeated the opposition successfully spelling words such as Bathysphere, Bibliography and Archetypal.
Eason Marketing Manager Alan Johnston was speaking at today’s launch of the Ulster Eason Spelling Bee.
He said: "Today marks the start of a fun and exciting journey for all those schools who sign up to take part in the 2013 Ulster Eason Spelling Bee. Last year we received a fantastic response from schools across Northern Ireland and we hope to attract even more entries this year.
"The nationwide Spelling Bee competition is one of a number of initiatives developed by Eason in support of child literacy. Earlier this year we launched our Get into Reading campaign, which is aimed at improving literacy amongst children. As part of the campaign, every Eason store across the island of Ireland hosts Story Time each Saturday at 11am, where our staff read a specially selected children’s book to children and adults alike, so thousands of people can enjoy the same book at the same time in over 60 different locations."
Schools which register to take part will be provided with an Ulster Eason Spelling Bee School Pack containing rules, competition formats and words to be used when conducting their own individual spelling contest to select the Spelling Bee to represent their school.
Schools can register to take part in the 2013 Ulster Eason Spelling Bee at www.easons.com/spellingbee and the closing date for entries is Friday 11th January, 2013.
