Man Arrested Over Dissident Activity

A man has been arrested in Belfast by detectives investigating dissident republican activity.

The 43-year-old suspect was detained on Thursday by the PSNI’s serious crime branch.

He has been taken to Antrim PSNI station for questioning.

Woman Charged Over Vodka Bottle Attack

A woman has been given a suspended sentence at Londonderry Magistrates Court after hitting a man on the head with a bottle of vodka.

37-year-old Shauna McCartney, of Benevenagh Gardens, carried out the attack as she walked with the man towards a bonfire in Creggan on 19 August.

The man had been verbally abusing her over her looks, weight and height.

A two month jail sentence was imposed, suspended for two years.

The court was told the pair had been drinking heavily at the time.

But McCartney's defence solicitor told the court his client was afraid of the man because of what she believed to be his threatening manner.

Police Investigate L'Derry Hit-And-Runs

Police are investigating two hit-and-run incidents in L’Derry.

One incident began on Wednesday at about 23:15 GMT when a green Hyundai and a blue Toyota Avensis were involved in a collision in the area known as The Diamond.

The same car was then involved in a collision with a police car on Shipquay Street twenty five minutes later.

A 44-year-old man was then arrested and questioned for allegedly driving over the limit.

A BMW carrying four passengers was involved in a separate hit-and-run in the Waterside on Wednesday evening at the junction of Irish Street and Knockwellan Park.

Elderly Man's Home Ransacked And Burgled

Police are appealing after an elderly man’s home was ransacked and burgled in north Belfast.

A gang of three men carried out the burglary when one of the gang called to the man's house in Kilcoole Park at about 13:00 on Wednesday.

The man claimed to be from a water utility company and distracted the owner of the house while two other men ransacked an upstairs bedroom.

Items of jewellery were stolen, but the pensioner was not hurt.

The man who called at the door is described as being about 25 years old, 5ft 9in tall, of slim build.

He is said to have been wearing a black woollen hat, black waterproof jacket, tan trousers and spoke with a southern Irish accent.

Another member was said to be about 20 years old, 5ft 8in tall and of heavy build.

He was wearing a brown coloured beanie hat and also spoke with a southern Irish accent.

The third gang member was in his late teens.

All three were wearing yellow and green industrial-type gloves.

Man Shot In County Down
A 28-year-old man has been shot in the leg in a gun attack in County Down. The man was getting out of his car at the Quays in Killyleagh at about 1.00am on Wednesday morning when a man approached him and shot him. The man is recovering in hospital where his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Police Officers Disciplined For Failing To Tell Doctor About Woman's Head Injuries
Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

Man Dies In Co L'Derry House Fire
A man aged in his 50s has died in a house fire in Magherafelt, Co L'Derry An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire at a house on Highfield Road, however police said that they don't believe the fire was suspicious. The man's identity has not yet been released.

Police Cancel Appeal For Missing Omagh Man
Police have said they believe missing Omagh man, Shane Sharkey, has been found in the Republic of Ireland. A police appeal for help in finding the 35-year-old has been cancelled, with police saying they now believe they know where he is. No further details have been released but police thanked the public for their help.

Man Arrested Over Murder Of George Gilmore
A 39-year-old man has been arrested by police investigating the murder of George Gilmore. Mr Gilmore, aged 44, was shot in the neck in Carrickfergus on Monday, 13 March. He died from his injuries in hospital the following day, 14 March. The suspect was detained in Co Antrim on Wednesday, 12 April, and is being questioned at Musgrave police station.
