Westlink Closed Due To Pipe Bomb

The Westlink and part of the M1 motorway have been closed after a pipe bomb was discovered at Broadway roundabout on Thursday morning.

Army bomb squad officers are at the scene and motorists have been warned to expect major traffic disruptions.

The PSNI said: "Due to the ongoing security alert at Broadway on the M1 has been closed eastbound and traffic is being diverted off the motorway at Stockman's Lane off slip.

"The Westlink has been closed and diversions are now in place."

SDLP Cllr Alex Attwood said: "It seems a pipe bomb has been discovered on a BT box at the Broadway roundabout. The police have closed roads and are diverting traffic as they try to deal with this.

"This device has caused traffic mayhem along a major route. Cars approaching the direction of this roundabout are backed up and at a standstill.

"The people behind this device are reckless. While everyone else was going about their normal business, trying to get to work, their contribution and intent was to cause injury and serious disruption."
