Alzheimer's Society calls on government to launch new NI report

The Alzheimer's Society has called on the government to reveal how many people in Northern Ireland have dementia so that services can be designed to cope.

The society made the call after it was revealed that older people in the province may have to wait up to six months to see a psychiatrist.

Psychiatrists believe such a wait could be detrimental to a patient's long-term prospects.

Although a government report into dementia was carried out in the mid-1990s made dozens of recommendations many have not been implemented.

The society believes that treatment has changed so much since that report that a fresh review is now needed.

However, while dementia is an illness that primarily affects older people, younger people are affected as well.
