Briege Meehan Given Suspended Sentence

Former Sinn Féin councillor Briege Meehan has been given a suspended prison sentence for child cruelty and assault.

Ms Meehan, from Elmfield Street in Belfast, admitted abusing her stepdaughter Mary Meehan 34 years ago and was sentenced to nine months in prison, suspended for two years.

The 66-year-old councillor and widow of prominent republican Martin Meehan pleaded guilty to a charge of child cruelty and two of assault.

Other charges, including sexual abuse, were not put before the court, UTV has reported.

Briege Meehan became the first Sinn Féin member of Newtownabbey Borough Council in County Antrim in 2001.

But the party suspended her following interviews with police regarding allegations made by her stepdaughter, Mary, in February 2009.
