Micheal Stone To Serve 30 Years

Loyalist murderer Michael Stone must serve a minimum of 30 years behind bars for the attack in Milltown Cemetery the Court of Appeal has ruled.

Lord Chief Justice Sir Declan Morgan Announced the decision today.

He said: "There are serious aggravating factors. The effects on victims will live with them forever.

"The learned trial judge recommended a minimum term of 30 years before he should be considered for release and I agree. The appropriate minimum term in this case should be 30 years."

Stone, 58, has been convicted of six counts of murder, and three charges of conspiracy to murder.

He was freed for six years under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement.

His one-man vendetta included the gun and grenade strike on mourners at an IRA funeral in Milltown Cemetery in 1988.

He killed three men, Thomas McErlean, John Murray and Kevin Brady and many were injured.

Between 1984 and 1987 he was convicted of the murders of Patrick Brady, Kevin McPolin and Dermot Hackett. The men were all Catholics.

Stone was jailed in 2006 after attempting to murder Sinn Fein leaders Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness at Stormont.

The ruling means he may not be considered for release until 2024.
