New Bus And Railway Centre Opens In Antrim

Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy has opened the new Integrated Bus and Railway Centre in Antrim.

The project was funded by the Department for Regional Development with support from the EU Interreg IVB North West Europe Programme (NWE). The project has been delivered through a partnership application referred to as SusStation.

Mr Kennedy said: "The recently completed work on the main station, will provide superb new facilities for passengers and can be seen as the first environmentally sustainable, low carbon station, in Northern Ireland."

The upgrade to the station building, which includes extended Park & Ride facilities, provides a total of 180 car parking spaces for commuters using the Antrim station. This extension is part of a wider £2.9m investment to deliver Translink's integrated rail and bus facility.

Man Convicted For Benefit Fraud

A man was convicted at Belfast Crown court for claiming benefits he was not entitled to.

Terence Sergeant (56) of Horn Drive, Belfast claimed Jobseekers Allowance, Income Support, Housing Benefit and Carers Allowance totalling £33,782 while failing to declare employment. He was given a one year prison sentence suspended for two years.

He is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

Van Driver Hijacked

Police are appealing for information after a van was hijacked by two men in Belfast on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident happened in the Gransha Parade area at around 3pm.

Two men made off in the vehicle which was later found in the Avoca Court area.

The driver of the van was not injured in the attack but was left very badly shaken.

Man Convicted Over £4,700 Benefits Fraud
A man has been convicted at Coleraine Magistrates' Court for claiming over £4,000 in benefits he was not entitled to. 31-year-old Michael Cruise of Oakvale Park, Coleraine, County Antrim, claimed Jobseekers Allowance and Housing Benefit totalling £4,702 while failing to declare employment.

Woman Arrested In Newtownabbey Released On Bail
A 37-year-old woman who was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office has been released on police bail. The woman was detained by officers from the Paramilitary Crime Taskforce in the Newtownabbey area on Thursday, 07 December. She was questioned at Antrim Police Station, however she has been released on bail.

Carrickfergus Fire Station announcement welcomed
East Antrim UUP Assembly member Ken Robinson has welcomed news that the Government is set to provide a new fire station in Carrickfergus providing a fitting salute to the bravery and skill of the town’s firefighters. The MLA also said the decision is a vote of confidence in a growing and vibrant borough.

Government give go-ahead for John Lewis development
