Pipe Bomb Found In Co Down

Police have confirmed that a viable pipe bomb was found during a security alert in Kilkeel, Co Down, yesterday.

The alert in the Ballykeel Court area of Ballymartin started at 12.30am on Thursday.

Residents were evacuated from their homes overnight during the alert and have since been allowed to return.

A police spokesperson said: "A viable pipe-bomb type device was discovered and made safe by ATO.

"It has now been taken away for further examination."

SDLP MP for South Down, Margaret Ritchie, condemned those behind the alert.

She said: "Those responsible are showing a reckless disregard for human life.

"The alert caused a great deal of inconvenience to residents who were moved from their home following the alert at Ballykeel Court. Families would no doubt have been deeply upset by the disruption. This action is not reflective of the local community in Ballymartin and has caused unnecessary disruption to this rural community.

"The people of South Down deserve to go about their everyday lives in peace and certainly without a threat to the safety of them or their children.

"Thankfully on this occasion no one was harmed. I would urge anyone with information regarding this attack to come forward to the Police and assist them with their enquiries."

Councillor Brian Quinn added: "The reprehensible behaviour of a delusional minority, who are jeopardising the safety of our community, is to be totally condemned.

"I was with the community last night as they responded to this disruption and threat to their peaceful way of life. I fully support the police in their efforts to bring those behind this pipe bomb to justice at the soonest possible opportunity."
