Two Men Rescued From Mourne Mountains

Police have confirmed two men have been rescued from the Mourne Mountains.

On Saturday evening, around 10.15pm, police received a report of two men being lost while on the Mourne Wallwalk, near Annalong Forest. They were seeking assistance on being guided down.

Police officers spoke with one of the men over the phone, while other officers attended the area and used the sirens and lights on the parked police vehicle in an attempt to give the men something to head to, however this was to no avail.

Following this, the Search and Rescue Co-ordinators (SAR) were contacted by police. Mourne Rescue Team and the police helicopter were also deployed to assist in the rescue. A police vehicle used its siren in the Quarter Road area and via telephone communication with one of the men, he confirmed that he could hear this. This helped SAR to locate the men shortly after 1am.

The two men were in good health and were able to make their way home once located.

Chief Inspector Davy Beck, Area Commander for Newry, said: "The safe rescue of the two men was made possible by the close working relationship between police and the rescue organisations. I am in no doubt that the excellent local knowledge and initiative of the officers involved was a key part in the successful rescue operation and I am pleased that they were able to assist in this incident resulting in the two men being found safe and well."
