L'Derry Mayor Welcomes DSD Funding
L'Derry Mayor Councillor Martin Reilly has welcomed an announcement by Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland of over £300,000 funding to go towards the refurbishment of the Lecky Road flyover.
Mayor Reilly said the news of the project, which will be managed and delivered by DRD Roads Service, was a huge boost to the city in improving the overall appearance and safety of this piece of infrastructure.
"This news is greatly welcomed," he said. "The financial assistance of over £300,000 to upgrade the appearance of this main arterial thoroughfare will both support the previous investment from many government bodies to tackle dereliction in buildings, roads and infrastructure throughout the city. This work will also complement the recent Walled City Lighting Strategy which has been successful in illuminating a number of built heritage buildings in and around our historic walls. Plans for lighting the area under the Flyover along with improvement in its physical appearance will now be enabled with this funding.
"This success of our City of Culture year can be measured in a number of ways; significantly the number of visitors who have come to the city this year and the level of increasingly positive feedback we have received in terms of how well our city's appearance has changed for the better. The flyover improvement work will add to the development over the last few years throughout the city and focus on creating a safer and attractive environment for both visitors, locals and nearby residents of the area."
