Shot Fired During Arrest

A police officer has fired a shot during the arrest of four men in south Belfast.

The incident began when police stopped a vehicle in the Donegall Road area last night.

It has been reported that the men were arrested following a car chase through the city. No one was injured.

An investigation has been launched by the police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland. A statement from the ombudsman said: "The Police Ombudsman’s Office has begun an investigation after a shot was discharged by a police officer in the Donegall Road area of south Belfast this evening (Wed 6 Nov).

"The incident happened after police stopped a vehicle. It is understood no one was injured by the shot. A number of people have been arrested.

"Police Ombudsman investigators have been tasked to the scene, which has been cordoned off for examination.

All discharges of police firearms in Northern Ireland are automatically referred by the Chief Constable to the Police Ombudsman’s Office for independent investigation.

The Donegall Road was cordoned off for a period while police carried out the arrests.

Police Officers Disciplined For Failing To Tell Doctor About Woman's Head Injuries
Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.
